Shizuoka's downtown area is an ideal spot for a walking tour, where you can explore a mix of historical landmarks and lively shopping districts.
1. Meet your guide at Shizuoka Station and take a short local bus ride to the historic Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, a place cherished by locals for its dignified presence and rich cultural heritage. *Note: The praying hall of the shrine currently is under renovation and is not visible.
2. Stroll down Sengen Street and immerse yourself in the local atmosphere. Discover charming shops and cozy cafes and restaurants, beloved by the locals.
3. Visit Sunpu Castle Park, where the great Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu once established his base. Stroll through beautiful Japanese gardens and admire the reconstructed turrets and gates, which showcase traditional Japanese craftsmanship. While much of the original castle has been lost, the impressive reconstruction offers a glimpse into its glorious past.
4. On your way back to the station, take a stroll down Gofukucho and Koyamachi Streets, the shopping areas in Shizuoka city. You'll find lively shopping centers, unique local shops, and plenty of places to explore. Don't miss the chance to enjoy Shizuoka's famous green tea sweets – a perfect treat! It's also a great opportunity to pick up some unique Shizuoka souvenirs at the station.
