Mt. Fuji: Japan's Iconic Symbol

Needless to say, Mt. Fuji is the highest and most famous mountain in Japan. You often see it on postcards and calendars that show 'Japan.'

Mt. Fuji is a mountain that lies between Shizuoka Prefecture and Yamanashi Prefecture, and you can see it from many places in Shizuoka City. Shimizu Port is one of those spots as well. You can get closer to it by visiting Fujinomiya city or Fuji city by car or train, which takes about 60 minutes from the port.

I grew up seeing beautiful Mt. Fuji since I was a child, from the ridge of the mountain near my house and even from my school. Every time I come back from overseas and see Mt. Fuji from the window of the Shinkansen, or the bullet train, on my way home from Tokyo, I always feel like I’m truly home.

As advice for travelers, winter is the best season to see Mt. Fuji as the air is clearer and there are more sunny days. In summer, it is often covered by clouds, but if you get up early, you can sometimes see it. Also, the mountain is snow-capped in winter while in summer, the snow melts and it shows a different look.

Please come to Shizuoka/Shimizu and see Mt. Fuji, a symbol of Japan!
